Tips to find an employer

Top tips for finding employment in training

Navigating Employment Challenges in Apprenticeships and Full-Time Training

One of the biggest roadblocks in both apprenticeship and full-time training is finding employment. In this short article, I will share my top tips for overcoming this challenge from the trainee's perspective.

Be Proactive

The most crucial step is to be proactive. It can be daunting, especially as a school leaver, but building the confidence to reach out to employers is essential. While parents, family, and friends can help build your confidence, you must be the one making the effort to contact employers directly.

Start with Job Boards

Begin with the obvious: job boards. Websites like Indeed and Google search can help you find local opportunities. Ensure your CV is up-to-date, detailing both your qualifications and personality. There are plenty of online resources to help you create a great CV, so invest the time in making it stand out.

Connect with Local Training Providers

Reach out to local training providers, as many have links to employers and can assist in making introductions. This can be a valuable resource in your job search.

Think Outside the Box

Beyond job boards, think creatively and be persistent. These methods work for both apprentices and full-time learners seeking work experience.

  1. Visit Local Wholesalers: Take your CV to local wholesalers, from big nationals like CEF, Edmunsons, and Rexel to small independents. Most will be happy to keep your CV behind the counter, and they often know busy electricians looking for labor.
  2. Use Social Media: Share examples of your work, whether DIY, college projects, or study examples. Search for local contractors on platforms like Facebook and engage with them. Let them know you're looking for opportunities and are keen to work.
  3. Utilise CPS Search Tools: Use the NICEIC and NAPIT search tools to find local contractors. Visit their websites and social media pages to make connections.
  4. Stay Consistent and Persistent: Rejection is normal, so keep going. Consistency and persistence are key.
  5. Leverage Industry Resources: Websites like Electrical Careers offer guidance and support to help you in your job search.
  6. Consider Agency Work: For those seeking work experience on full-time study routes, agency work can be an option. Holding a CSCS card is often required, though it's not ideal I do know of people who have made this work.

Wider Issues

While individual efforts can make a difference, broader issues around employer engagement and funding need government-led solutions. For now, navigating the current landscape is the best we can do.

Conclusion

I hope this article offers some helpful tips. I plan to open this platform to other contributors to build a useful, free industry resource. Good luck!
